John Wilson (Oxford): Bounded word length in groups
Vortrag im Kolloquium des Felix-Klein-Collegs
Abstract: The lecture will describe informally some ideas concerning values of group words in finite and infinite groups. These ideas have important applications to profinite groups and to the model theory of groups and are likely to have future applications. The principal application so far is a theorem of Nikolov and Segal established
in 2003 which answered a question of J.-P. Serre dating from the 1970s. The main steps in the sketch of the proof will be sketched.
