Abstract: With any group one can associate a natural algebra of operators on a Hilbert space. Such algebras are classically a basis for applications of the theory of operator algebras to areas such as geometry, topology or representation theory. Recently similar algebras associated with semigroups rather than groups have been studied. It turns out that, for natural semigroups arising from number fields, the associated algebra of operators has intriguing properties that reflect the structure of the field.
