Counting closed geodesics
Abstract: |
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of homotopy classes of periodic orbits for the geodesic flow on a rank one manifold of nonpositive curvature. This extends a celebrated result of Fields medalist G.A. Margulis to the nonuniformly hyperbolic case and strengthens previous results by G. Knieper. While proving this result, we also manage to carry out Margulis' construction of the measure of maximal entropy without requiring strong hyperbolicity. |

On Kähler zeta functions
Abstract: |
The general objective of zeta functions is to count arithmetic or geometric objects. Since even in the most classical case of the Riemann zeta function there are infinitely many objects (positive natural numbers) involved, "counting" cannot not be taken literally, and zeta functions are instead defined as a sum of terms depending on a variable s and the objects to be counted. The talk focuses, after some background, on an almost forgotten kind of zeta function that counts (in the above sense) infinitesimal geometric objects; in other words: ideals with finite quotient in power series rings over a finite field, and in related rings. |

Two-dimensional pseudomanifolds on few vertices
Abstract: |
A collection K of 2-simplices together with their edges and vertices in some Euclidean space is called a 2-dimensional weak pseudomanifold if through each edge there are exactly two 2-simplices. If moreover, the geometric carrier of K (the union of all the 2-simplices of K) is a manifold then K is called a combinatorial 2-manifold. A combinatorial 2-manifold is called regular if the degree of each vertex (number of edges through each vertex) is same. In this lecture we will present all the 2-dimensional weak pseudomanifolds on < 9 vertices and all the regular combinatorial 2-manifolds on < 12 vertices. There are exactly (up to isomorphism) 13 such weak pseudomanifols on 7 vertices. There are exactly 44 combinatorial 2-manifolds on 8 vertices, the geometric carrier of them are the 2-sphere, the real projective plane, the torus, the Klein bottle or the space consisting of two 2-spheres. There are exactly 52 weak pseudomanifolds (2-dimensional) which are not combinatorial manifolds on 8 vertices and whose geometric carrier are 11 topological spaces. We show that there are exactly 27 regular combinatorial 2-manifolds on < 12 vertices. |
